Recently Dr. Duffy incorporated a three dimensional scanner into the practice to better treatment plan and treat patients requiring implants. This scanner is called a cone beam scanner and is a very precise type of x-ray called a NewTom. The scanner, which is computer based; scans the head and jaw area within 15-30 seconds, thus reducing the amount of exposure. This is diagnostic for the areas where Dr. Duffy will be working only. It does help to determine the amount of bone, density of bone, position of nerves, and any abnormalities which will be a problem during implant reconstruction.
It will also allow Dr. Duffy to perform virtual computer surgery prior to the actual procedure. It significantly reduces unforeseen surprises and problems at surgery time. It also will show any abnormalities in the bones and sinus cavities, which the doctor can then diagnose or refer you to the appropriate specialty for treatment or biopsies and further treatment if needed.
